Is Alabama's fat tax a good idea?

I just read this article that talks about Alabama state employees will have to have monthly weigh-ins and weight counseling, which I would imagine would include nutrition, exercise, and the possibility of a weight loss supplement. If employees refuse to do the "program" and are considered obese, they will have to fork over $25 a month. Alabama currently has the second highest obesity rate in the country and Alabama is trying to lower its health care costs. A BMI of 30 or above is considered obese, but Alabama is being a little more lenient and allowing a BMI of 35 before the program or fee needs to be implemented. So my question is...is this a good idea and why or why not?

Why is it ok to charge for being fat, but not a smoker?! Or, if you engage in other risky behavior which will cost money in the end, shouldn't you have to pay more. We'd all end up paying more.

i think thats horrible and mean, they should have gone another way with it. maybe if your over weight have a mandatory weight loss clinic you have to go to like alcoholics go to AA meetings? just a thought, xo.

Yeah. I am kind of in-between. One part of me thinks it might be the boost that some people are looking for to keep up motivation for a healthy lifestyle. On the other hand, it would make the people feel awful. How humiliating. I guess I don't really know where I stand on this.
