The Fear of Flying

Phobias are common--everything from flying to bugs to swiss cheese. Ok. Maybe the last one isn't so common. But phobias nonetheless interest me. I like to study why people are afraid, what exactly they are afraid of, and ways that get over that fear so that they can function normally and not have that debilitating fear.

So, let's focus on the fear of flying...or aerophobia. It is true that some people have an overall fear of flying and everything it entails, but sometimes it can be pinpointed to one specific fear that flying happens to include. Here are a few:

  • Fear of heights
  • Fear of terrorism or terrorist acts while on the plane
  • Claustrophobia (being in a closed, tight space)
  • Being afraid of turbulence
  • A strong dislike for flying over large bodies of water
  • Or the fear of crashing

And from what I understand, there are several ways that those with the fear of flying cope and deal with their anxiety:

  • See a therapist. Just like in the movie "French Kiss", therapy is an option. It will help you figure out what exactly you are afraid of and how to effectively deal with it.
  • Medication usually works too. It will help calm you down and help you relax .
  • I guess your other option could be to find other modes of transportation

For those who have a fear that the plane will crash, I wonder if it would help them knowing that all safety precautions were taken pre-flight to ensure a safe landing? For example: many plane crashes are caused by faulty wiring. But new technology enables airlines to use an arc fault breaker to detect faulty wiring within feet of the problem. This way, they will be aware of the problem and can fix it before the plane takes flight. I know it makes me feel more safe flying, but then again, I've never had an intense fear of being up in the air.

Yeah I have a serious fear of heights which sucks b/c I go to alot of amusement parks with my friends but b/c of my fear I can never ride the roller coasters etc. so I'm always stuck behind holding my friend's stuff. I need to get over it.
